About this Book
“Big or nothin’” is the credo of Pepper Hotwell, a professional gangster who specializes in armed robbery. Set in the ghetto of Gary, Indiana and Chicago’s south side in the late 1960s, his story is a raw, desperate, gun-slinging roll-of-the-dice fueled by drugs, sex, ambition, and pure will to survive. As he swashbuckles his way through a series of high profile heists, he demonstrates his willingness to follow his credo to its ultimate conclusion in his quest for the big score.
Pepper moves through a culture that oscillates between extremes of poverty and wealth. Money is made and lost in an instant. Self-indulgence competes with loyalty to family and loved ones. His story vividly depicts the lifestyle of people on the underbelly of society, using every means possible to claw their way to the top. Drug addiction, greed, and violence are shown naked and unromanticized, yet the roots of Pepper’s risk-seeking attitude are also laid bare, lacing his self-aggrandizing trajectory with an implicit social critique.
About the Author
The late James Edward Allen penned this fictionalized chronicle of his life and criminal escapades during an eleven-month lockdown in the Indiana State Prison, where he was serving a life sentence for murder. Allen was a rare breed, a career criminal with a code of ethics and modus operandi that set him apart from ordinary street thugs and made him feared and respected by both his peers and law enforcement agents.
Allen grew up gifted in art and music, but found the flash of the streets more thrilling. During his final incarceration, he acquired a respectable measure of remorse. “I would rather live on beans in freedom than dine on prime rib if the side dish was more time behind the walls,” he said. The cover art is one of many collages he created in his prison cell, using a straight-edged razor, pictures clipped from discarded magazines, school paste, and water-based house paint.

The late James Allen wrote BIG-N-NOTHIN' during an 11-month lockdown at Indiana State Prison where he was serving a life sentence. BIG-N-NOTHIN' is fiction based on fact. One of the most feared - and respected - gangsters that Gary, Indiana, knew in the 1970s, Mr. Allen chronicles his criminal escapades, culminating in the heist of millions from the Mob in Chicago. Mr. Allen's criminal activities are masterfully merged with his drive for the big score, which he learned how to engineer while doing time in federal prison. The book reads like a novel, with meticulous character development and careful plot and sub-plot progression intertwined on several levels to heighten the drama. Mr. Allen has captured the essence of the gangster's mindset and aids the reader in understanding this oft-tagged throwaway segment of our society. As for the title of this review, Mr. Allen explained, "I would rather eat beans in freedom than dine on prime rib if the side dish was doing more time behind bars." A fascinating read with many twists and turns to hold the reader's attention. Side note: The late Leonard King, editor at Holloway House Publishing in LA, said of BIG-N-NOTHIN' in 2006, "I do think that Mr. Allen has talent as a writer and is better than most authors who submit to us...Mr. Allen uses fine turns of phrase; he has sharp dialogue, mixed with a certain superficiality of character; he creates dramatic situations...to me, his work is in that upper echelon of writers who show promise."Product details

Big 'n' Nothin' edition by James Edward Allen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I would definitely recommend this book. Colorful, exciting characters take you along with them on a journey. You'll find yourself rooting for Pepper, the main charcter, to suceed while simultaneously expecting his failure. Brilliantly written.
Pretty good book. It got kind of slow towards the middle, but all in all a good read. Diamond and Pepper made a good team. Pepper was sometimes too good to be true with some of the capers he pulled, but for the most part his actions were believable.
Pepper was a small time crook, with big time dreams that he somehow made true!! His philosophy was simple....do BIG things or nothing at all. He "thumped" used heroin and cocaine daily, had two ride or die women and had a arsenal of brothers in crime that would stop at nothing to help him make BIG moves.
I absolutely LOVED this book! I could hardly put it down. I was surprised at myself because he is definitely a villain but you kind of want him to get away with his crimes. (???) I love the way the writer so eloquently expressed himself and gave the readers just a hint of what was going to happen in the future without actually revealing it. The sex scenes were described in detail and nothing was left out. This was just a great read - plain & simple. I have no idea why it was free but thanks ! I truly enjoyed it!
Reading about all that Pepper does to come up was thrilling..I couldn't believe he got away with all the things he did and still went on to bigger things. Pepper was a gangster who didn't play but who protected those he loved and looked out for anyone he came to trust. I'm loving Pepper, I could read about him all day!! This book was well written and deserves more stars than I'm able to give it here.
I enjoyed reading this book, as I found it an interesting look into the mind of a gangster killer sitting in prison doing a life sentence, and his idea of how he wished things had turned out. In this book the hero and heroine are both heroin junkies and murderers... something I've never seen before in a novel. I'm sure a lot of the stories are based on fact, and Allen creates an interesting perspective on a world and subculture that main stream Americans are very unaware of.
I must say I enjoyed this book it is my opinion that it reminded me a little bit of Donald Goin style of writing. I wonder if there will be another part to show what happened to Doris and Pro's baby. This kindle fire does not recognize the name of the author I listed when I attempted to spell it the correct way it spelled coined instead . I must also say that the typos were minimal and no grammatical errors to my recollections. I thought it was a good read for a free choice .
